How To - Build a Member Segment Group With an External List

Typically, criteria within Kognitiv Loyalty database is used to build segment groups.  However, in some instances, it may be desired to build a segment group of members using external criteria that is not easily input, or able to be input into the database.  In this case, the preferred method is to utilize member descriptors.  These descriptors are used to qualify appropriate members by assigning them to the descriptor and a grouping rule can be used to segment members based on this descriptor.  If more than a simple assignment is needed, such as a field or data point with multiple values, a member custom field may be a better option.

Create a Member (or Member Import) Descriptor

System Location: Admin / Descriptors

There are two types of member descriptors that can be used for this purpose.  A member descriptor or a member import descriptor.  The sole functionality difference between these two descriptors lies in the ability to manually toggle the descriptor status for a member.  A member can be assigned or unassigned to a member descriptor on a per-member basis via the application and can be assigned via a Member Descriptor or Member Descriptor Extended file import.  Using a member import descriptor, members can only be assigned or unassigned in batch via the Member Import Descriptor or Member Import Descriptor File w/ Status file import.

To begin the creation of a descriptor, navigate to the appropriate system location, and click the "Add" link at the top of the page.  The external reference may be used in the import, depending on the type of import utilized and although not required for data input, it will be required if referenced in the file import specification.

Altering Member Descriptor Assignments

Manually (Member Descriptor Only)

System Location: Member-Services / Clienteling Services

To manually assign or unassign a member to a member descriptor, retrieve the member, hover over the "Expanded Settings" link in the left module, then click the "Descriptors" link.

Within this page, you can check, or uncheck this member's status for any member descriptor.  You can also observe member import descriptor statuses here.  If you wish to commit changes, click the "Save" button.

File Import

    Main Article: File Importing

Using the appropriate file import specification, members can be assigned or unassigned to a member-related descriptor in batch.  To use this functionality, a list of Account Ids (one per line) must be assembled in a plain text file before proceeding unless an "extended" file is being utilized.

Create the Member Segment Group

After the assignments have been completed, you can create the appropriate member segment group (Example: Campaign Member Group for use in an Email Campaign).
