A placeholder account refers to a member that has been added via the Id Type Auto Range functionality. This member is eligible to explicitly state their account Id when finishing their enrollment on the customer web portal.
Prior to 2016.6, the placeholder status was disabled at any time the "core" account info was saved in Clienteling Services or in the customer web portal. In 2016.6, this is expanded to any time core, address, phone, or email information is saved.
